San Diego, CA - For decades, an unsuspected geological blunder has limited crucial technical understanding of how, where and why petroleum and natural gas deposits form. Exposing and correcting that vital mistake offer the promise of new insights and potentially vast new energy-resource discoveries. Since the 1930s, the idea of mantle convection has been inextricably rooted in common geological interpretations of the Earth's dynamics. In a paper just published in the March 25, 2010 issue of Curr...

BANGALORE: India is set to launch in a month its powerful rocket with the homemade cryogenic engine to propel a satellite into a geosynchronous orbit and become only the sixth nation to develop this complex engine. The much awaited launch has been billed as a landmark event for the country's space programme after its maiden unmanned moon mission Chandrayaan-I in 2008. India had been using Russia-made cryogenic engines so far for satellite launchings. A cryogenic engine will be used for the first...

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) set a new energy record this morning, tripling its former peak performance. In doing so, the "big bang machine" took an important step toward full-power operation. At 5:20 a.m., local time, in Geneva, Switzerland, physicists sent two proton beams racing around the Large Hadron Collider's oval-shaped, 17-mile-long (27-kilometer-long) underground tunnel. Each beam packed a powerful 3.5-trillion-electron-volt (TeV) punch—the highest energy yet achieved in a particl...

A new technology being developed by a Calgary company could address one of the biggest problems of the oilsands: high water usage. Petrobank Energy and Resources' process recently passed a significant hurdle, validating a technology its backers say will not only get out more oil, but also have a smaller environmental footprint. Petrobank's Whitesands underground combustion pilot project near Conklin, Alberta, south of Fort McMurray.(Petrobank Energy and Resources) Last week, independent engineer...

US producer prices - the wholesale price of goods leaving the factory gate - fell by more than expected in February, official figures have shown. The seasonally adjusted index for producer prices fell 0.6% in February, the biggest fall since July. The fall was attributed by the US Labor Department to a 2.9% drop in energy costs. Analysts said the figures indicated that there were few inflationary pressures in the economy. Stripping out energy and food costs, core producer prices rose by 0.1% n Fe...

But the program is more than a speed contest. It's part of an effort to go fast and travel further without having to carry lots of rocket fuel, which is cumbersome. The X-51 will be powered by a hydrocarbon-based jet fuel called JP7. The Air Force might want to base a high-speed, long-range missile around the technology, or make a very fast spy plane with it. NASA began looking at the technology (it ran the X-43 program) to develop a less bulky and expensive way of getting to space. As it stands...

Most polymers — materials made of long, chain-like molecules — are very good insulators for both heat and electricity. But an MIT team has found a way to transform the most widely used polymer, polyethylene, into a material that conducts heat just as well as most metals, yet remains an electrical insulator. The new process causes the polymer to conduct heat very efficiently in just one direction, unlike metals, which conduct equally well in all directions. This may make the new material espe...

March 2 (Bloomberg) -- Delek Group Ltd., the holding company controlled by billionaire Yitzhak Tshuva, will expand in energy and infrastructure through natural gas exploration and more acquisitions, Chief Executive Officer Asaf Bartfeld said. “While we’re seeking to remain strong across many sectors, our main growth focus in the coming years will be in the energy and infrastructure industries,” he said in an interview last week at his office in Netanya, Israel. “We hope continuing explor...

Projecting spacetime, According to the holographic principle as envisioned by Craig Hogan, each grain of information encoded on a surface (left) becomes larger when seen by an observer a great distance away, just as the graininess inherent in a movie is magnified when projected onto a big screen. Call it Hogan’s noise. Many physicists are skeptical, but if his hunch about the existence of this subatomic clatter proves correct, it could have a mind-boggling implication: that the entire universe...
