    • Brookhaven studying jatropha oil combustion properties (Biodiesel Magazine)- May 20, 2010
    • Brookhaven National Laboratory is beginning work on evaluating the combustion properties of jatropha oil. The Upton, N.Y.-based lab selected SG Biofuels to supply seeds and oil from its Latin American jatropha plantations. C.R. Krishna, Brookhaven’s lead biodiesel researcher, told Biodiesel Magazine how Brookhaven came to choose a jatropha oil supplier for this new study. Krishna said when Brookhaven first decided to test jatropha oil, researchers had difficulty obtaining samples. “I couldnâ... More...
    • ISuppli:Solar Thermal Seen Growing Faster Than Photovoltaic Power (The Wall Street Journal)- May 18, 2010
    • DOW JONES NEWSWIRES. The fastest-growing segment of the solar market is projected to be the solar thermal market, which is expected to see a more noticeable jump in demand than the larger photovoltaic power segment, according to iSuppli Corp. The research firm expects solar thermal, or concentrated solar power, to undergo a boom as newly installed capacity explodes. Annual global CSP installations are projected to reach 10.8 gigawatts in 2014, up from just 0.29 gigawatt last year. Over that time... More...

    • Green machine: Rethinking internal combustion engines (News Scientist)- April 13, 2010
    • It may seem dirty and outdated compared with the batteries that power electric vehicles, but the internal combustion engine is set for a makeover that could halve its greenhouse gas emissions. Today's engines are pretty inefficient, converting only around a quarter of the energy contained in fuel into motion; the remaining three-quarters is lost as heat. So efforts are under way to recover some of this lost energy in the hope of reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Up to 40 per cent of ... More...
    • Combustion Residue Lowers Carbon Dioxide Emissions in Concrete (Science Daily)- April 9, 2010
    • ScienceDaily (Apr. 9, 2010) — The cement used in Oslo's new Bjørvika tunnel kept 8,000 tonnes of CO2 from entering the environment -- the equivalent of 60 million vehicle trips through the tunnel. The more environment-friendly concrete is the result of intensive research collaboration. The Norwegian concrete industry won worldwide acclaim for its gigantic North Sea constructions. Its best-known achievement was the Troll A platform in 1995 -- the largest structure ever moved by man.... More...
    • Graphene advances toward next generation applications (Nanowerk News)- April 8, 2010
    • (Nanowerk News) The single-atom thick material graphene maintains its high thermal conductivity when supported by a substrate, a critical step to advancing the material from a laboratory phenomenon to a useful component in a range of nano-electronic devices, researchers report in the April 9 issue of the journal Science. The team of engineers and theoretical physicists from the University of Texas at Austin, Boston College, and France's Commission for Atomic Energy report the s... More...
